A special thank you to the whole of our community,In the very early hours of October 9th, OTM activated our emergency phone tree system. We had just learned that both communities, in which all of us work and many of us live, were on fire and the extent of the devastation was unknown.Because of the 2014 earthquake in Napa, and the commitment on behalf of our leadership to ensure OTM had an emergency plan in place, we had all of the systems ready to launch into action. By 10AM we knew that all of the OTM staff had escaped safely. Before noon, the staff from each program began to reach out to those that rely on us for support, and we all worked to assess the damages. We were fortunate to have not sustained any damage to any of our facilities. On October 10th OTM opened for limited services. We knew the importance of being present and visible leaders and the weight of the responsibility that we carry. Over the next few days OTM would become a drop-off and distribution center for donations, organize a 24 hour translation system, join with other community partners to open and staff a CBO side of the Local Assistance Center and be a safe space for all members of our community to join together, share a meal and begin the healing process. We did all this in true OTM fashion - sharing leadership, offering a special sense of connectedness and demonstrating the relentlessness for which we are known. The next few weeks were a mix of emotions. While we were all still very frightened, some of us with our cars packed with all of our belongings in case we had to flee, we also began to see the community coming together. In the weeks following the fires, OTM, supported by our many partners, would go on to assist over 3,000 people in both Napa and Sonoma Counties. We began to offer emergency relief aid to those that had suffered losses and we slowly began to figure out how to take care of ourselves and others. To everyone that supported us during this time, please know that we made you proud. Our staff worked tirelessly and with a particular tenacity that can only exist when you live in true relationship with your community. To the people that turned to us in your time of need, thank you for trusting us with your vulnerability and allowing us the opportunity to work alongside you as we all recover. As we start to see through the smoke and ash, the rebuilding process is daunting and sometimes seems overwhelming. We are comforted to know however, that some of the most passionate, intelligent and loving people in the world continue to support our efforts and cheer us on. OTM would not be the agency we are without each and every one of you. You may never know the extent to which your kindness helped us to make it through, but please know that you are all main characters in our story of triumph. It is from the bottom of our hearts and with the utmost gratitude that we extend our appreciation. With an unmatched love and the highest respect, we thank you.
