I earn my daily bread

as an educator for youth. I am the director for the Leadership Academies and try to inspire young people to create change in themselves and their community. This work has been a personal challenge for me as I learn how to be real with the young people I work with in order to build meaningful relationships. In turn, I hope that I can challenge the young people to reflect on who they are and commit to growing and changing.

How my leadership has changed as a result of OTV

As a result of OTV, I have realized that I have the abilities to be a leader and that I always have more to learn. To be an effective leader, I have to build meaningful relationships with people and be real about who I am and what I am thinking or feeling. I also learned that being an effective leader means asking for help and knowing who is the right person to ask. I now know that a leader cannot do everything on their own and that a leader knows how to utilize the people around them. Lastly, when planning a performance I try to not look at the end product as the sole measure of success. Success is also measured by how effectively I foster relationships among my team members and that individuals on my team were coached to stretch and grow so they could reach their potential. I do not do all of these things very well all of the time but they are my goals as an effective leader.

Where I’ve come from and where I expect to be in the next 3-5 years

I grew up in the community of Napa on a cattle ranch my family owns and operates. I moved to Sacramento to attend college where I earned my degree in social science and teaching credential. I returned to Napa (not my first choice) to begin my teaching career at the age of twenty-three where I taught at Napa High School for five years. Seeking to do something different, I joined On the Verge Group 6 and now work for On The Move. In the next three to five years, I do not know where I expect to be. Right now, I feel like a world of opportunity and choices are open to me and it is my job to figure out what my purpose is on this planet. Some things on my list of choices are going to graduate school to get my masters in curriculum and learning, opening an antique store, coffee shop, or bed and breakfast, getting involved with museums and the preservation of historic buildings, and adopting a child. My list is diverse and all over the place, but presently I am okay with that.
