*My Story
- I am
Visionary Valuable Intelligent Strong Impactful
One of a few black women with a Ph.D. in Computer Science
Noteworthy
Artistic
Real risk-taker
Young at heart- I earn my daily bread
Inspiring young people to use and understand technology in ways they may have never imagined. As a middle school technology teacher at Prospect Sierra School, a private school in El Cerrito, California I develop integrated curriculum and teach lessons that bridge technology to other subjects and society at large. I challenge and redefine what it means to be a technology teacher in the 21st century.
- How my leadership has changed as a result of OTV
On The Verge transformed a visionary accustomed to achieving her goals on her own to a leader who is not afraid to be in relationship with others in real, honest and open ways and use their help to achieve her visions. I know more about the value of what I have to contribute to groups and communities and I use my voice to share those ideas and have them come to fruition.
- Where I’ve come from and where I expect to be in the next 3-5 years
I come from a dark place filled with instability, loneliness, uncertainty, judgment, and confusion generated by outside voices telling me where I, a Ph.D. in Computer Science should place my stake in the world. Working with underserved and underrepresented youth in the technology field moved me from darkness into light. I am in a bright place where I am deeply connected, happy, grounded, focused, energized, and ready to bring my new visions into reality. I want to develop a youth-run enterprising non-profit where youth generate revenue through consulting, training, and design services for community members, businesses, and organizations. I expect my light to permeate dark places where others may hide by continuing to expose my truth.
- My story of impact
I am a second year middle school technology teacher. Black. Female. Computer Science Ph.D. I teach in a kindergarten through eighth grade independent school in the San Francisco Bay Area. Contra Costa County. El Cerrito. Prospect Sierra School. The school is comprised of about 100 faculty and staff. Ten percent people of color. Almost 500 students. Forty percent students of color. My presence has not only changed the physical makeup of the school, but the skills I developed in On The Verge have helped me to impact the school community even beyond my role as technology.
Educator. On a day-to-day basis I teach fifth through eighth grade students a variety of technology skills from keyboarding to using Microsoft Office applications. I provide my students with opportunities to build confidence, passions, and strong foundations for their futures. My title is technology teacher, but my role is much greater than that. Mentor. I spend two lunch periods per week building a safe space for students of color. A place to talk about what it means to be a person of color in a privileged environment – discussing their own privileges and lack of privileges. Role model. I show up for students, teachers, and myself with energy to lead and to inspire creativity and collaboration. I am building community at Prospect Sierra through digital storytelling. Real. Sharing parts of my life story with the school community opened up a dialogue and space for students and staff to share themselves with one another. I work on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee to address issues relating to students and staff of varying backgrounds. Reflection. On the Verge. Rejuvenation. On the Verge. Network. I am changing a community day-by-day. Leader
