Title: Director of Arts
Education
Reports to: Chief Operating
Officer
Supervises: Associate
Director of Programs, Artist-in-Residence, Program Assistant
Responsibilities
- Working closely
with the Executive Director, manage and oversee the artistic and programmatic
operations of the organization. - With the Executive
Director, create and articulate a programming philosophy that expresses
the vision, mission and goals of the organization; evolve and realize
programs in line with this philosophy. - Serve with the Executive
Director as a member of the executive team in Board affairs; represent
Urban Gateways as assigned on Board committees and public events; report
to the Board on all aspects of the organization’s program activities. - Curate and realize
annual artistic season for all matinee and touring performances. - Oversee all artist
recruiting and professional development. - Negotiate and manage
artist and vendor contracts. - Review and evaluate
artists and programs and recommend continuation, expansion or deletion
based on factors such as validity, relevance, quality, financial feasibility
in response to the organization’s goals and mission; collect and assimilate
programmatic ideas and models for improvement of current programs and
innovation. - Develop, establish
and cement relationships and partnerships with/between other arts education
providers, schools and school districts, community development corporations,
community-based learning centers, other cultural organizations and social
service organizations in response to goals set forth in short- and long-range
programming plans. - Provide leadership,
professional development support and oversight to program personnel,
including guiding the staff in goal setting and performance review initiatives. - Collaborate and
participate as an active partner with the Executive Director and Chief
Operating Officer in balancing the artistic initiatives of the organization
with financial realities; in collaboration with the Chief Operating
Officer, develop and implement program department budget. - Collaborate with
the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer in creating and implementing
strategic plans for the organization. - Attend artistic,
community and education events to promote the organization and position
the organization as a leader in the arts education field. - Participate with
the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer and key development
staff in fundraising, corporate sponsorships, government and foundation
grants cultivation/solicitation opportunities. - Participate with
the Chief Operating Officer and marketing and communications staff in
the marketing and promotional activities of the organization and serve
as a spokesperson representing the programmatic department of the organization. - Serve as the organization’s
primary liaison to the Chicago Public Schools Senior Administration,
Chicago Archdiocese Schools Administration and other local education
agencies. - Attend conferences,
community events, performances, educational events and work outside
traditional office hours as required to advance the artistic and programmatic
goals or the organization. - Perform other related
duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A Master’s degree
in arts and/or education-related field or equivalent experience. - Minimum of five
years in a senior management position as an artistic and/or programmatic
director. - Demonstrated artistic
and programmatic leadership within a nonprofit cultural organization,
with management experience in collaborative and team environments. - Demonstrated expertise
in the conception, development and implementation of artistic, arts
education and professional development programs. - Broad knowledge
of the arts and arts education field on local, national and international
levels. - Superior communication
skills; ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies
in a diverse community; strong public speaking skills. - Demonstrated experience
in budget preparation and management. - Technologically
skilled, proficient in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity
with database programs.
