Well another day on the teaching job. It seems like new problems arise ever day but Today was quite interesting. I am currently working on a commercial production unit with my students and I am trying to use the opportunity to teach them about the power of advertising in their lives.
We have gone through several lessons and experiences to address this and today to cap it of a showed them a film called "The Ad and the Ego". In fairness I would say that this film is not a work of cinematic genius but it is a work of academic genius. And it was produced in part by Sut Jhally a professor of mine in school.
I remark about this because the commercialization of youth and youth culture is something that I am very aware of and something that I feel is incredible important to educate my students about.
So the long and short of it is that the film ended and a student said "Well that was worse than watching paint dry." What can I say, not everyone will get it. But none the less it was hard to hear and I felt like kickin his ass. But the next period I rebounded and showed it agin with more intention and people seemed to understand.
I guess it is like shakespeare, if a teacher says, here's hamlet, read it and tell me what you think, not much is going to happen. So the lesson for me is to remember to slow down. I musn't take anything for granted.
regards, Casey
