Our Approach

ArtLinks provides an educational approach that pairs art instruction with children’s regular classroom environment. In many cases, art is integrated directly into other core subjects of learning - including math, reading, and language arts.

We believe that learning and experiencing the arts directly contributes to the development of students’ intellectual and personal capacities. In addition, we have found that the ArtLinks program has been especially beneficial for many students who have experienced school as a place of failure or frustration. The experience of success in their art classes has helped them realize that learning matters and that they matter. For all students, ArtLinks has helped build a sense of self-efficacy and self-esteem. Teachers have reported increased motivation and enthusiasm from their students, and have expressed gratitude for the opportunity to see their students “shine” in a new light.

On the Move has partnered with Salvador Elementary School and McPherson Elementary School to co-create ArtLinks, the first public arts integration program of its kind in Napa County. The purpose of this program is to use arts education as a means to assist elementary students in improving their academic performance and to enrich their lives. On the Move staff and artists worked together with Salvador and McPherson teachers and administration to create a model in which classroom teachers collaborate with artists to to provide high-quality arts experiences for every children in their school. Throughout a given year, students experience a wide range of arts-based learning, which may include visual mediums such as painting, illustration, and ceramics – as well as the performing arts such as dance, theater, and music.

Goals for ArtLinks

  • Build partnerships among family, schools, community, artists, and arts and cultural organizations.
  • Provide opportunities for students to interact with community members outside of the school.
  • Support students in the creation of their own artistic works.
  • Improve student academic performance.
  • Enhance the learning experience of all students by emphasizing individual talents and learning styles.
  • Empower teachers and administration to co-create an innovative curriculum.
